Dowagiac Animal Hospital offers heartworm preventatives as an injection we can administer in the clinic or as an oral flavored chewable we can send home with patients. We offer these two choices so you can decide which type of protection and which method of administration you prefer for your dog.
The injectable heartworm preventative, called Proheart, protects against heartworm for six months and can treat hookworm infestations. This can be given by the doctor or vet tech during our walk-in hours.
We also carry an oral preventative called Iverheart. These come in a chewable tablet that is flavored to make them palatable to your dog. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, these tablets can also treat and control roundworm, hookworm, and tapeworm infections.
Because of the devastating effects of heartworm disease, we suggest keeping your dog on one of these preventatives year round. Heartworm prevention has a 99.1% efficacy, so we also suggest a heartworm test once a year, preferably in the Spring, so that we can catch any chance of infection early.
From time to time, you may notice the particular brands we carry change. We do this because, like most medications, heartworm preventatives can fluctuate in price. It’s our goal to give you the same options of quality protection while giving you the best price.
Depending on your pet’s medical history, our veterinarian may have a preferred preventative for your pet. We are always here to discuss the options and help you choose the best protection for your dogs and cats.
